MakerSpace: Wind Powered Engineering Challenge

Step into a hands-on engineering challenge where you’ll design and build your own wind-powered vehicle, then put it to the test in a live race.

Working individually or in small teams, you’ll explore how air movement can generate motion. You might create a sail-powered boat or a wind-driven car, experimenting with different designs, materials, and approaches to maximise speed and control. You’ll have the option to incorporate simple electronics if you’d like, though no prior experience is required.

The day is structured as an active build-and-test experience. The first part of the session focuses on designing and constructing your vehicle, followed by a series of races where you can refine your design and compete against others. Whether powered by fans or alternative air-based methods, the emphasis is on creativity, problem-solving, and learning through experimentation.

This is a full-day, studio-style activity designed to be practical, collaborative, and exploratory. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of applied engineering principles and the experience of taking an idea from concept through to competition.

You must complete all training courses within this KEATS course before attending: https://keats.kcl.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=137538. It should take about 30 minutes to complete.
