FAQs & Getting Help
What counts as a King’s Edge activity?
Any meaningful activity beyond your academic course credits that helps you develop your skills, connect with others, explore interests, or make a difference.
This includes volunteering, mentoring, creative projects, skills workshops, competitions, leadership roles, and more.
What do K Points mean?
K Points are our way of tracking and recognising student engagement and effort in extra-curricular learning.
- You earn K Points automatically by taking part in verified activities.
- Each activity has a set value based on its type and duration.
- You can track your total on your dashboard and these will be used to unlock awards/rewards when they’re launched. If you achieve 150 K-Points, you’ll receive recognition on your HEAR for your commitment to engagement in learning beyond your course
They provide a structured way to reward participation across King’s Edge activities, ensuring students are recognised for both structured learning and independent application.
How do I earn K Points?
You earn K Points automatically when you engage with verified opportunities listed on the platform. Each opportunity has a value assigned to it depending on the time commitment and type of activity. K Points are generally dependent on the hours and the intensity of the activity.
Intensity level:
- Passive Experience (Listening to a talk)
- Involved Experience (e.g. Discussion)
- Active Involvement (e.g. Workshop or skills development session)
- Autonomous Responsibility (e.g. a project that can only exist through their effort)
- Leadership (e.g. coordinating a project)
For example, a 3-hour workshop would fall under ‘Active Involvement’ and therefore equate to 9 K Points (3 hours x 3 intensity)
Can I personalise the platform so I can find opportunities appropriate for me?
Yes, you can book the activities you would like to take part in. Add activities to your ‘My Activities’ tab to keep track of your journey and to tailor future King’s Edge communications to your interests.
You can add your preferences for activity types, faculty and campus under ‘Settings’ in your profile. We’ll be improving this functionality as the year goes on to make it more personalised to you.
Can I submit something I’ve already done?
Yes. We’re working on a self-submission process for activities outside the platform which will be launched in the coming weeks, but for now, focus on joining activities listed through King’s Edge.
How is this different from my degree course?
King’s Edge is about everything you do in addition to your degree. It helps you build your confidence, networks and skills in real-world contexts, giving recognition for your full university experience.
Do I need to do a lot to take part?
No - you can do as much or as little as works for you. King’s Edge is flexible, accessible and designed to fit around your life. A single experience can make a difference.
Will this appear on my degree or transcript?
We’re currently working on a reward and recognition framework to enable you to demonstrate your achievements. In addition, if you achieve 150 K Points or more, this will be recognised on your Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR).
Do I need to sign up separately for King’s Edge?
No - if you're a King’s student, you already have access. Just log in using your university account and start exploring opportunities.
Can postgraduate students use King’s Edge?
Yes. King’s Edge is for all students, undergraduate and postgraduate. This includes any study abroad students or distance learning students, as long as the activity is suitable for your location and time zone.
Is this just another platform I need to check?
We know students are busy - King’s Edge brings lots of extra-curricular activity together in one place so you can explore, track, and take part more easily, without jumping between platforms.
In time, we plan to bring all extra-curricular activity into the King’s Edge platform, but for now, it is still worth checking other platforms like Careers Connect, King’s Volunteering and King’s Sport & Wellness, etc.
What if I don’t know what I want to do yet?
That’s completely fine. King’s Edge is designed to help you discover your interests. You can explore themes, try different experiences, and shape your journey as you go.
How do I know what opportunities are right for me?
You’ll receive recommendations based on your interests, things you’ve favourited, attended or set as your interests. You can also filter by type, theme, or availability to find what suits you best.
What if I miss an opportunity I wanted to do?
Many activities are recurring or offered throughout the year. Keep checking the platform or follow relevant services and groups to stay updated.
Is there a cost to taking part?
Most opportunities are free for King’s students. If there are any costs (e.g. for materials or trips), this will be clearly listed, and we aim to ensure accessible options wherever possible.
Can I use King’s Edge to prepare for job applications?
Yes. All the experiences that you’ve had during your time at King’s will be visible in your ‘My Journey’ section and can be used as talking points in CVs, cover letters, and interviews.
Can I list an event or activity as a student?
Unfortunately, not at the moment, but we’re working on how this might be possible in future.
Who do i contact if i need support?
We’re committed to making extra-curricular activity accessible to all. From flexible formats to inclusive design, we’ll support you to get involved in ways that work for you. If you need any support or have any questions, contact us at kings-edge@kcl.ac.uk.
