Join us for the first ‘How to…’ event of the 2026-27 academic year, hosted by the King’s Alumni Relations Team in collaboration with King’s Careers & Employability. This is your chance to hear directly from King’s alumni about how to get ahead in your career.

In this session, we will talk about how to respond when things in your career aren’t going your way. We will explore how to stay resilient when the job hunt gets tough, how to transition and pivot when your career goals and passions change, and how to look after your wellbeing when personal or professional setbacks impact your career.

About our alumni panel

We will be joined by an alumni panel with a diverse range of career histories and life stages, to provide their unique perspectives and reflections on how you can face setbacks and challenges in your own career head-on.

Helen Pattinson (Mathematics, 1992) is a successful entrepreneur as co-founder of Montezuma’s, one of the UK’s most-loved chocolate brands. Leaving a successful career in the city, Helen followed her passion and built the hugely successful chocolate company.

Alex Cameron (Economics, 2020) graduated from his course during COVID and faced a gruelling job search, applying to over 100 roles before starting his career in fintech.

Tanyel Gabil Kazim (French and Management, 2016) has built a career working in higher education, supporting currents in their own career search by building partnerships with employers. Tanyel’s role gives him excellent insight into the wider job market and challenges graduates can face when looking to progress.

Lika Petitt (MSc Neuroscience and Psychology of Mental Health, 2021) began her career in private equity recruitment before founding her first executive search firm, whilst also pursuing postgraduate studies and facing personal health issues. Lika is now also an accredited coaching psychologist who runs workshops to help individuals build mental resilience and navigate setbacks.

The session will last 60 minutes, which will include a structured conversation followed by an opportunity for questions from the audience.
