25 February - Room: WATERLOO FWB 2.81

Time: 10am – 4pm

In this two day course, delivered by academic staff from King’s Business School, you will gain the skills and confidence needed to read and understand financial statements. You do not need to be “good with numbers” to take part. Financial accounting is less about complex calculations and more about understanding the processes, structure and logic behind the figures. Often described as the language of business, this course is designed to help you become fluent, particularly if you have little or no prior accounting knowledge.

The course is open to students from across King’s and is designed to support a wide range of future career paths, including roles in the private, public and not for profit sectors. Understanding whether an organisation is profitable, how it is valued and whether it has sufficient cash flow to operate sustainably is a vital professional skill. Financial reporting enables you to see what is really happening inside an organisation and to make informed, evidence based decisions.

Teaching will be highly interactive and focused on using real financial information to support business decision making. You will also have access to online resources that allow you to practise and consolidate learning independently. Students must be available to attend both sessions on 23 and 25 February. For the sessions, students are expected to bring their own laptop and charger, and to make their own arrangements for lunch.

By the end of the two days, you will be able to read, understand and prepare basic financial statements. The course covers the core building blocks of financial accounting, with a strong emphasis on applying key principles confidently in practice.
