Are you a Chinese woman, LGBTQ+ student, or ally at King's College London? Looking for a safe space to meet like-minded people, reflect on your experiences, and get creative?

Join us for a free creative workshop exploring language, identity, gender, and university life through collage, and conversations inspired by withdrawn books from King's Libraries and Collections.

Collaging Your University Life Workshop

How has your university experience felt so far? What kinds of stories, people, and spaces make you feel welcome or excluded?

Using withdrawn books from King's libraries as creative prompts, we'll reflect on our experiences of university life through conversation, drawing, and collage. Together, we'll explore what belonging means to us and imagine a more inclusive university.

Details:

Location: Room G.13 in the Maughan Library

Workshop Language: English and Mandarin

No previous art, collage or zine-making experience needed.

All materials will be provided. You're welcome to bring your own materials to cut up and collage, such as Freshers' Guides, essays, or any other paper materials that reflect your university experience.

Just come along, create, and meet new people.

Facilitators:

Qiu Bai (she/her) is a community organiser and socially engaged artist. She founded Queer China UK hoping to create a “home” for the Chinese LGBTQIA+ diaspora community.

Jonathan Koestlé-Cate (he/him) is a Learning & Teaching Librarian at King’s. He helps to run Book Alchemy, a series of workshops that use withdrawn library books as the raw material for creative engagement with word and image.

Please note: the workshop is part of a collaboration between Libraries and Collections, Queer China UK and the Co-creation with Chinese Communities research group. With your consent, workshop outputs (e.g. zines and collages) may be used in the Co-creation with Chinese Communities research group’s research, and you may choose to take part in an optional follow-up interview. Participation is voluntary, and you can decide at any point during the workshops not to have your work included in the research.
