This opportunity is part of the King's Edge Summer Skills Programme
Students who completed the full 6-week Introduction to British Sign Language course will be eligible to progress onto a BSL Level 1 Top-Up, designed to support achievement of a recognised Level 1 qualification.
This short, focused extension (approximately 15 additional hours of guided learning) builds directly on the knowledge and skills developed during the introductory course. You will deepen your vocabulary, strengthen your understanding of BSL grammar, and gain greater confidence in holding more sustained, structured conversations.
Sessions will continue to be delivered by a tutor from the Deaf community, with an emphasis on authentic communication, interaction, and cultural understanding. You will explore more complex language use, broaden conversational topics, and practise applying your skills in real-life scenarios.
Eligibility for the Top-Up will be confirmed against attendance records from the 6-week course, with progression offered to those who have successfully completed the full programme.
What you will gain
Work towards a Level 1 BSL qualification
Greater confidence in everyday and extended BSL communication
Expanded vocabulary and understanding of sentence structure
Deeper insight into Deaf culture and communication practices
