Welcome to King's

This opportunity is part of the King's Edge Summer Skills Programme

Curious about AI and data, but not sure where to start? Already confident and want to build something ambitious? This six-week online sandpit is open to students from any discipline and any starting point. Using a rich synthetic dataset modelled on a university environment, you’ll explore, experiment and develop your digital confidence in ways that suit your interests, whether that means prototyping, visualising, analysing or questioning what data can and can’t tell us.

WELCOME TO STONEGROVE...

Stonegrove is fictional. Its questions are not. It is also, for reasons nobody has fully explained, home to a number of elves and dwarves, but we would urge you not to let that overshadow the data.

Stonegrove is a simulated university: thousands of students, multiple programmes, years of institutional data, and a whole landscape of patterns, pressures, gaps, behaviours and unanswered questions waiting to be explored. It is not a real institution, but it has been built to feel real enough to think with. Step into it and you step into a world of progression data, student journeys, support needs, decision points, inequalities, ambitions, blind spots and possibilities.

This six-week online sandpit invites you to enter that world and make your own way through it.

You might follow a strange pattern in the data and see where it leads. You might build a rough prototype, create a dashboard, investigate a question with AI, or take a more critical route into what the data reveals, obscures and assumes. The point is not that everyone produces the same kind of work. The point is that you find your own angle and use Stonegrove as a space to experiment.

Some students will arrive already confident and eager to build. Others will be trying AI and data analysis in a hands-on way for the first time. Both belong here. This is an interdisciplinary space designed to help you enter at your own level, stretch your digital confidence, and leave with something you can share, reflect on and talk about afterwards.

Whether you are curious, cautious, ambitious, technical, analytical, creative, or simply unsure where to begin, Stonegrove gives you a digital world in which to try things out.

WHO THIS IS FOR...

This opportunity is open to students from any discipline.

It may suit you if you want to:

- experiment with AI in a practical and creative way

- build confidence with data and digital tools

- explore a question from your own disciplinary perspective

- make, analyse, visualise or critique something

- try new methods in a supportive online environment

You do not need to be a coder or data specialist to take part.

FORMAT AND DATES:

This is a six-week online sandpit. You should expect to commit around 5 to 6 hours a week, including:

- a live online session each Friday

- around 4 hours of independent tinkering

- preparation towards a final online showcase

Live sessions every Friday between the 29th and 3rd July (presume 1pm to 3pm, though some might be a bit shorter). You must be available for the 29th, 5th, 26th and 3rd to take part properly.

OUTCOMES

By the end of the sandpit, you will have:

- tested and extended your digital confidence

- explored AI and data in a realistic simulated environment

- developed an output to share in the final online gallery

- built experience you can reflect on and talk about afterwards
