Welcome to King's

English for Action are a grassroots charity, who use language skills to enable people to have a social, economic and political voice. They do this by providing free participatory, action-orientated English language classes for migrants across London.

In 2024, King’s College London secured funding in partnership with English for Action to develop EmpowerESOL, a free and flexible English language programme. Offering a mix of online and in-person classes across different levels, the programme supports a diverse range of learners, including parents from Empoderando Familias, sanctuary seekers, forced migrant students, and King’s staff. King’s volunteers support learners in the classroom as teaching assistants. A dedicated research team conducts analyses of what works and of the programme's longer-term impact on social mobility.

To support English for Action in better understanding user needs and evaluating the impact of its programmes, both at King’s and in the wider community, the charity is seeking a student intern to assist with research and evaluation.

This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in how monitoring and evaluation are carried out in the charity sector, particularly in measuring and demonstrating impact.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

- Attending ESOL classes both within the local community, at King’s and online – to get first-hand experience of how English for Action operates. Please note some classes will take place on the weekend – you will receive time back in lieu for this.

- Assisting with survey implementation, transcription processes and supporting participatory workshops.

- Attend meetings with key stakeholders, research guidance meetings and community organising training

This is a one-month internship running from 22 June to 19 July, with a pay rate of £15.29 per hour.

As part of the role, you’ll be expected to attend in-person classes within King’s and the local community, in-between this you are able to work remotely or there is workspace at King’s is available if preferred. This can be arranged in discussion with your line manager.
