Join us for the third ‘How to…’ event of the 2025-26 academic year, hosted by the King’s Alumni Relations Team and King’s Careers and Employability as part of King’s International Women’s Day celebrations.
In this session, we will hear from King’s alum Emily Berrington (Development Geography, 2008), an actor, coach, and non-profit director. We will talk about how to find your voice, communicate with confidence, and how to connect with others through meaningful and authentic conversations.
Emily graduated from King’s with a degree in Development Geography in 2008. Since then, Emily has gone on both to star in acclaimed stage, TV and film roles, and to work as a communications consultant, political campaigner and advocate.
Emily began her graduate life in politics, working in the House of Commons before undertaking conservatoire training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Emily then starred in numerous roles on stage and screen, including in The Inbetweeners 2 and Humans. She used her platform as an actor to support campaigns and causes, and spoke at a number of political conferences. Throughout these varied experiences, the need for confident communication skills was a constant. Emily started investigating how people learn these abilities, who is excluded, and how to transform the approach to what is considered “good” communication.
Emily is an EMCC-accredited and experienced coach and is now using her experiences to help others gain confidence in self-expression. Noting that ‘most of our interactions aren’t through delivered speeches’, Emily goes beyond traditional public speaking training. Instead, she focuses on how we communicate in day-to-day situations, supporting others to listen with curiosity, challenge and lead effectively, and bring their full selves to a diverse range of situations.
Emily is a co-founder of Let Them Talk, a non-profit dedicated to helping young people develop the art and skill of dialogue. Emily is also committed to examining how communication is done in relation to advocacy. She also supports the 50:50 Parliament campaign, which aims to achieve gender balance in the House of Commons, and as a coach, she frequently works with women about communication in the workplace.
