This opportunity is part of the King's Edge Summer Skills Programme
In this two-day course, delivered by King’s Business School, we will introduce you to the core ideas and tools you need to begin understanding finance with confidence. You do not need to have a background in finance or to think of yourself as especially “good with numbers” to take this course. Finance is not only about calculations: it is about understanding how organisations make decisions, assess opportunities, manage risk, and create value over time. This course is designed to help you build that understanding from the ground up, particularly if you have little or no prior knowledge of finance.
The course is open to students from across King’s and is intended to support your future career, whether you plan to work in the private, public, or not-for-profit sectors. Finance sits at the heart of almost every major business decision. Questions such as how a business should raise capital, whether it should borrow or seek investors, how much return it can create for shareholders, how it should value a business, how to choose between competing investments, and how to manage or reduce risk are central to the way organisations operate. These are the kinds of questions discussed in boardrooms every day around the world, and the ability to engage with them is valuable in almost any professional setting.
This course will show you that finance is both analytical and practical. Some aspects can be learned through core principles and established techniques, but many financial decisions also require judgement, because markets are uncertain and real-world contexts are often complex. For that reason, finance is as much an art as it is a science. Throughout the course, you will begin to understand not only the key concepts, but also how those concepts are applied in practice when organisations make important financial choices.
The course will be highly interactive and focused on applying finance concepts to real-world situations. You will explore how financial thinking supports decision-making and how to interpret the information organisations use when planning for the future. Alongside the in-person sessions, you will have access to a range of online materials to help you consolidate your learning and practise at your own pace. The course will give you a practical foundation for understanding how organisations make financial decisions and respond to the challenges they face.
By the end of the two days, you will be able to understand and apply key finance concepts with greater confidence. We will work through the foundations of finance, focusing on essential principles and, above all, how to use them in practice when evaluating decisions, performance, and future opportunities.
